PROTECTING ENVIRONMENT, PRESERVING ECOSYSTEM Businesses have a role in ensuring that the diversity of the natural environment is not adversely impacted by their activities and operations. To further promote this concern, the year under review saw AMAL initiating the AMAL Untuk Alam initiative to raise environmental awareness among Bank Islam’s employees. For a start, an e-waste campaign was organised at Menara Bank Islam to encourage employees and other tenants of the building to donate unused electronic items for recycling. Sets of stainless-steel straws were also distributed to all Bank Islam employees at the HQ and branches throughout the country, to encourage the practice of re-using everyday items. In addition, during the toxic waste chemical incident at Pasir Gudang, Johor, contributions of 50 cartons of isotonic drinks, 2,000 energy bars and 20 boxes of N95 masks were made available to volunteers assisting at the forefront. Maintaining Heathy Lifestyles While Keeping the Environment Clean During the year under review, Bank Islam organised its first ever beach plogging activity, and at the same time, contributed to the beautification of the beach itself. About 400 volunteers consisting of Bank Islam employees as well as participants from Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan , SWCorp, Alam Flora, Kolej Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah, Kolej Vokasional Kuantan, Kolej Poly-tech Maram and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa participated in cleaning up Pantai Sepat located near Kuantan, Pahang. Plogging is a combination of “plucking” and “jogging,” a multitasking activity that combines keeping the environment clean by collecting trash with actions that burn calories. Using this concept, volunteers for the event managed to collect more than a tonne of trash while jogging along a 2 km stretch of the picturesque Pantai Sepat beach. The event also saw the AMAL team contributing five units of swings for visitors to the beach to enjoy, including six units of ‘ bangku santai ’, along with other decorations meant to make the beach landscape more attractive. This effort was conducted in collaboration with SW Corp.
