BIMB Integrated Annual Report 2019

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AT PULAU TUBA Background Nestled about a 20-minute boat ride away from Langkawi, the lesser known Pulau Tuba was dubbed as ‘a hidden gem of the Langkawi archipelago’ by The Expat magazine. The island is home to more than 3,000 people, and contain three villages, Kampung Pulau Tuba, Kampung Lubuk Chempedak and Kampung Selat Bagan Nyior. An idyllic traditional fishing village, Pulau Tuba is named after the Tuba plant which is a species native to the island. Pulau Tuba is primarily a fishing and farming community, with fishermen making up 60% of its population. Under the AMAL Untuk Alam – Sustainable Community Development banner that promotes such initiative, the Bank helped to create a sustainable future for the local communities at Pulau Tuba and conserve precious marine resources, by contributing to the local fishermen’s effort in creating their own “ unjam ”. Unjam is a fish aggregating device (“FAD”) whereby man-made objects are used to attract fishes, making them easier to be found and caught, which will in turn help the fishermen to increase the amount of their catch. This effort will also contribute to the development of Pulau Tuba’s budding fishing tourism industry. By rallying the local community to clean up the beaches and providing the FADs for distribution into the sea, AMAL aligns with a commitment to realise United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (“UNSDG”) , which among others, include promoting “Life Below Water” (“SDG 14”) . Contribution and Activity Details • Distribution of 20 FADs (Unjam) at Pulau Nyior Setali (10) and Pulau Lima (10), with BHB contributing RM10,000 for the construction of FADs • Contribution of RM3,000 worth of grocery items to 30 asnaf , with each receiving RM300 worth of items • The plogging activities saw participation of 200 students from four schools in Pulau Tuba ( SMK Langkawi, SK Pulau Tuba, SK Lubuk Cempedak, SK Selat Bagan Nyior ) as well as the local communities, where they are involved in cleaning up the beach of Pantai Tepi Laut, Pulau Tuba • The programme was conducted in collaboration with Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia (“LKIM”), Majlis Pengurusan Komuniti Kampung (“MPKK”), SW Corp and Langkawi Development Authority (“LADA”). Objectives • To conserve and promote growth of precious marine resources within the area via distribution of FADs • To preserve the cleanliness and natural ecosystem of the beach area via plogging activities • To raise awareness on the importance of environmental protection and actions through engagement with the local communities • To help promote sustainable development of the communities’ economic activities through collaboration and engagement with the stakeholders and local communities • To strengthen relationships with the local communities and stakeholders.
