BIMB Integrated Annual Report 2019
Case Study 1 Batu Maung Waste Transfer Station Eurasia Express Sdn. Bhd. operates the Batu Maung Waste Transfer station on behalf of Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (“MBPP”), the local authority of Penang Island. With the capacity to receive 80 tons of waste a day, the station serves the Northeast and Southwest districts of Penang Island. The establishment of the station allows MBPP to fully utilise its waste collection trucks within the city of Penang, as the trucks do not have to travel long to reach the station. The station is capable of reducing the volume of waste to be transferred to the landfill with its waste segregation and management process, which allows certain types of waste to be recycled. Additionally, with the reduction in waste volume, fewer trips are needed to transfer the waste to the landfill, further contributing to the reduction in carbon footprint. GREEN FINANCING While the industrial and energy sectors continue to develop for the good of society, those developments should not come at the cost of environmental destruction that could lead to many other malaises. Bank Islam’s Green Financing initiative encourages customers and the industry sector to be more aware of their responsibility towards the environment and the issue of climate change, as well as increase their participation in sustainable development. The initiative supports projects that focus on Renewable Energy as well as developments that implement Green Technology . The Group’s target is to increase the usage of more sustainable renewable energy and encourage development projects that promote environmental conservation and leave minimal impact on the environment. Bank Islam does this by providing financing facility to clients participating in such projects. Total Financing Amount under Green Financing Portfolio 2019 RM1.76 BILLION Batu Maung Waste Transfer Station is designed and constructed with environmental preservation and mitigation in mind. Various measures were implemented to ensure that its construction and operation are in compliance with the regulations as stipulated by the Department of Environment, and that the surrounding area is environmentally protected and comply to guidelines such as Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”), Environmental Management Plan (“EMP”) and Environmental Monitoring Report (“EMR”). The buildings within the facility itself are certified ‘Green’ as they were constructed to comply with the Green Building Index (“GBI”) standard. The station also features a water recycling and containment pond that enables rainwater to be harvested and recycled for consumption, reducing reliance on potable water. Additionally, the landscape surrounding the area is specifically designed and irrigated to utilise the usage of rainwater, further reducing potable water supply from the local water authority. The station provides a public recycle centre to support the “segregation at source” programme by the Penang state government, and encourage recycling and waste segregation among members of the public. 75 BIMB HOLDINGS BERHAD 199701008362 (423858-X) Shareholders’ Information Financial Statements Additional Information Disclosure Summary
