Financing a Greener Future In the heart of Malaysia’s push for renewable energy, Gading Kencana Sdn Bhd (Gading Kencana) is in a good position to lead the transition toward a sustainable and low-carbon future. However, for its Group Managing Director, Dato' (Dr) Ir. Muhamad Guntor Mansor Tobeng, achieving this vision requires more than aspiration and innovation; it also demands strong partnerships. Gading Kencana has found an ally committed to advancing the renewable energy sector by providing the necessary support, including financing, that the company require. With RM455.95 million in financing from Bank Islam, they are realising their mission through two transformative solar farm projects in Melaka and Perak. The 8MW solar farm in Melaka, operational since 2014, generates 11.30 Gigawatt-Hour (GWh) of renewable energy annually, effectively reducing 7,223 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions each year - equivalent to the environmental impact of planting 85 trees. Meanwhile, the 30 megawatt (MW) solar farm in Bidor, Perak, produces 53.655 GWh annually, achieving a reduction of 34,283 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, comparable to planting 401 trees annually. Bank Islam’s green financing efforts extend further through its support for Gading Kencana subsidiaries, Sand Town Solar Sdn Bhd (STS) and Gading HBA Sdn Bhd (Gading HBA), thus advancing renewable energy programmes such as the New Enhanced Dispatch Arrangement (NEDA) and the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP). These initiatives lower financing costs and spur the development of cutting-edge projects aligned with national sustainability goals. Through its purposeful funding of renewable energy innovations, Bank Islam is accelerating decarbonisation and strengthening Malaysia’s green energy infrastructure. These efforts illustrate how responsible investments can align profitability with environmental stewardship. Muhamad Guntor said, “We are very pleased that Bank Islam shares our vision and commitment to supporting the growth of the renewal energy sector through the provision of green financing. The effort reflects good relations between Gading Kencana and Bank Islam since 2019 and the Islamic financial institution's solid support for the country's clean energy sector. Through the financing, we can succeed in our mission to provide clean energy to every consumer in this country."
